The changing face of Latrobe's famous Wells Building:
Wells has been a beloved part of the Latrobe community for 130 years.
Samuel Sternberg built the store at 108 Gilbert Street in anticipation of the arrival of the railway in 1885. Having encountered financial difficulties he sold it to William Wells who moved his business from the Don in 1893.
Wells Latrobe has always been a family-owned business and earlier this year the Nikitaras family purchased the business and began renovating the historic site. Renovations are due for completion in 2016 when customers will be treated to a beautiful Hill Street Grocer similar to the Nikitaras’ stores in southern Tasmania.
